A blazing fire threw its glowing warmth on the dark walls and still darker ceiling, and the hoop of flaring candles had just been topped by the efficient natural snuffers of John Hogg. Bottles, glasses, pipes, a huge bag of lump sugar, lemons, spoons, and grog-pestles, stood in thick array upon the polished mahogany; while, flanking its lengthy sides, sat a greater number of " right merrie folk" than had as- sembled since it formed the festive board of " the Chalked-off Coachman's Free and Easy." In his wonted position, upon the pail, John OR THE ROAD OF LIFE.
