158 The Stewardship of Faith But we, almost unconsciously, have been obliged to take over from geologists, anthropologists, and biologists a new Weltanschauung 1 which tells us that men have lived on the earth for innumerable centuries, that there is no evidence of a "Fall, " 2 that men have been always imperfect, but also have always, though with many relapses, struggled upwards, seeing the heights and stumbling towards them. To express the facts of religious conscious- ness in the language of this Weltanschauung is surely not an impossibility, even though it has not yet been done adequately.
