What reading level is The Story of Chicago book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
" The "Western Plank" branched off and stretched twenty-eight miles to Elgin. Lake Street was planked west for seventeen miles. On all these roads there were tollgates every few miles. The gatekeeper lived in a little house at the roadside. When a driver came up, he found a pole let down across the road, l)locking the way. At the noise of wheels the gatekeeper stepped out, asked how far the man was going, and told him how much he must pay. The driver gave the money, the gate was lifted, and the... wagon drove on. This money went to the owner of the road. If the city had paid for the planks and the work, she got it. If some men had built the road, privately, they received the toll money. There were taverns also, a day's journey or so apart. Here the drivers could lodge at night and get a hot meal and a glass of whisky and a few hours' gossip before the warm fire. It was all much lietter than the earlier days of mud and wilderness. These plank roads were busy with heavy Hoosier wagons and plodding oxen and flying coaches behind their jangling teams.
