This -^ginetan war thus proved really the indirect cause of the salvation of Greece, for it forced Athens to become a maritime power, THE DREAM OF XERXES 333 and induced her to keep on hand the one means by which alone she could hope successfully to resist the Persians. The two hundred ships had not been used for the purpose for which they had been built, but they became a help indeed to Hellas now in this supreme hour of need.
