She was too candid and inexperienced herself to see in their true light all the intrigues of Mile. Desrozais, whom she supposed to be seriously in love with Roland ; and she certainly was far removed from the feeling of envy to which Mme. De Beaumesnil and the young Baroness attributed the coldness of her manner ; but she had been unpleasantly surprised by the extreme promptitude with which M. De Val-Chesnay had usurped in the heart of Clotilde the place of the Raoul who was in Persia.
