II. THE HOTEL DE VERGNES. THE marriage of Clotilde and the events which had preceded it had produced between the families... of Beaumesnil and Farias a sort of cool- ness and restraint from which even Sibylle was not exempt. She was too candid and inexperienced herself to see in their true light all the intrigues of Mile. Desrozais, whom she supposed to be seriously in love with Roland ; and she certainly was far removed from the feeling of envy to which Mme. De Beaumesnil and the young Baroness attributed the coldness of her manner ; but she had been unpleasantly surprised by the extreme promptitude with which M. De Val-Chesnay had usurped in the heart of Clotilde the place of the Raoul who was in Persia.
