What reading level is The Story of the Ashantee Campaign book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Now hitherto we had never beaten the Ashantees in the bush. The battle of Dodowa was fought in a plain. At Elmina the Ashantees were defeated by Festing, but that was in the open. At Essa^ man Sir Garnet won a bush-fight, but there were few Ashantees present At Abrakrampa Russell repulsed a great army, but he held a fortified post. On the other hand, the experi- ment of Europeans versus Ashantees in the bush had never been fairly tried. When Sir Charles Macarthy was defeated and sur* rounded an...d killed with nearly all his officers in a great bush-battle fifty years ago, he had merely a handful of inferior European troops and a mob of Fantee allies. When Festing fought twice in the bush near Dunquah, when certain British officers fought near Abrakram- pa, when Wood fought at Fesoo, they com- manded disciplined negro troops or attempted to command undisciplined native allies. Never had a regular regiment engaged the Ashan- tees, and now at length the great question was about to be put to the test.
