Thus was the Army of the West divided into three columns, to oper- ate in regions remote from each other and never again to be united in one body. 40 THE CONQUEST OF SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO On the morning of the 25th, the column was ready for its long march to the Coast, and, at two in the afternoon, le...ft Santa Fe and reached Albuquerque on the 29th, at which place the Rio Grande was crossed ; thence the valley was followed to the Jornada del Muerto and thereafter, across the plains into the valley of the Rio Mimbres, from which locality Kearny pro- ceeded westward to the Pacific Coast, reaching San Diego in December. The conquest of New Mexico was complete ; achieved without the loss of a man or the firing of a gun, the work was finished. Kearny and Doniphan, going out from the then western border of civilization, marching upivards of a thousand miles through lands overrun w r ith hostile Indians, making a circuit equal to a fourth of the circumference of the globe, providing for the army as they went, returned with trophies taken from fields the names of which were unknown to themselves and their friends.
