Bauscher, a most scholarly man, the school came into first rank among the academies of the State. In 1884, following soon after the Semi-Centennial cele- bration, the building was destroyed by fire. Undaunted, however, the community rose as one mind to the rebuilding of its school, under the able leadership of Principal F. E. Partington and Rev. Ame Vennema. The following year S3 Dr. Henry A. Balcom became principal, and in conjunction with the Board of Trustees was in- strumental in having the... school converted into a State Normal School. In December 1885 the building was formally presented to the State for the establishment of a Normal and Train- ing School. Before February of the next year a Local Board and a provisional faculty with Dr. Eugene Bouton as principal, was ap- pointed. During the first term the number of students in all departments was eighty-nine. From this time on the growth of the school was so rapid that it was hardly well established be- fore the building was found to be entirely in- adequate.
