We were then in advance of the rebels, and it was expected that the error committed at Williamsport would be atoned for at Manassas Gap. But instead of attacking with his usual earnestness. General French wasted a whole day in reconnoitering the position. When the Gap was at last forced, it was only to find that he had been baflied by a small rear-guard.
