To establish such amity the United States Government sent a squadron of seven vessels, under the command of Commodore M. C. Perry, in the autumn of 1852, to convey a letter from the President of our republic to the Emperor of Japan. In that letter the Japanese ruler was invited to agree to a treaty of MATTHEW C. PERRY.
friendship and commerce between the two governments. Af- ter visiting and surveying the Loo Choo Islands, Perry's squad- ron entered the Bay of Yeddo, Japan, in July, 1853. They ...were greeted by a fleet of Japanese government boats sent to arrest their progress ; but as the steam-vessels passing rapidly into the harbor with sails all furled, the Japanese officials were astonished, for they had never seen a steamship before.
Perry had been instructed to use no violence with his ves- sels unless attacked, in which case he was to let the Japanese feel the full weight of his power. He proceeded at once to perform his errand. lie sent the letter to the Emperor, and 286 STORY OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY.
