This plaiu setting forth of the situation was not without efiect, and order was partially re- stored. The country immediately in front of the camp was low and swampy, so that the only approach was by a narrow causeway. By breaking down the dikes and opening the sluices, their position could be rendered inac- cessible, and this was now attempted. But the Spaniards were already close at hand. Before the work could be completed, their advance guards came up, and drove back the troops who were destroying the dikes.
