The writers of each class of books use to a great extent the same ^ords : they certainly use words of the same class. The diction of Poetry (as has been said above) is not that of Prose, and even the several kinds of Prose differ in this respect. To have a specialist's knowledge of words in many different subjects is not often possible; but a man of the higher culture may justly be expected to know many words outside of the topics of his own profession or his own special reading. Further, readi...ng must interest the reader, and be critical. Perfunctory work — so many hours, so many pages a day, done list- lessly or in a fit of absence of mind — is simply idle.

The rule to read at least so much a day is beyond all question good ; but, if the reading is done mechanically or inattentively, the rule is as little fulfilled as the injunc- tion to pray always is obeyed by carrying about a prayer on one*s hat-band or by sewing it in the hem of one's coat. At the same time, no truce should be made with the temptation to indulge morbid appetites.
