And it may be held that, in matters of taste, there is only doxa, there is no episteme^ there is only opinion, there is no know- 84 THE STUDY OF ART ledge. Yet where scepticism begins there is no end. It would be just as easy to insist upon the Pyrrhonian attitude of mind with regard to truth, as it is with regard to beauty. Scepticism is a phase in human in- tellectual development. It is a matter of temperament. I believe it is in so far subjective. We can all feel sceptics at times ; we must feel it.
