The old Vedic religion, it is true, with its elaborate mythology and its intricate ritual, itself represents the result of an attempted reconciliation between religion and philosophy, for, together with survivals of primi- tive religious conceptions, Brahmanism contains elements that belong to advanced forms of religion, but the assimilation was not complete, and when further independent speculation ensued, the popular faith was in no position to accept further modifica- tions.
