What reading level is The Supernatural in Tragedy book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The first instance of a devil-motive in the period is the farcical mock conjuration in Gammer Gurton's Needle; and the running allusions to such matters in later comedies do not suggest an attitude of real dread. Shakespeare uses Joan of Arc's supposed relations with the fiends in i Henry VI, but not in a very striking way, and with emphasis on the trivial and impleasant aspects of the legend. We find plays which fluctuate between the semi-serious and the wholly comic, such as RQwley'^ fj^rth "...f Mf,rUn, -^^prf- mat- ter which does not lack a serious side, and which indeed occasionally compels the dramatist to a certain sobriety, is for the most part made an excuse for foolery of a rather vulgar sort. Likewise the prologue of The Merry Devil of Edmonton, in which the enchanter Fabell tricks the fiend 264 THE SUPERNATURAL IN TRAGEDY who has come to demand fulfilment of his contract into granting him a seven years' respite, is serious at the begin- ning, but soon passes into the comic, and has no bearing on the rest of the play.
