Kti or the knowing principle which is evolved out of the Sattva-guwa is infl...uenced by the Tamas, Manas or thought-principle is formed, with its Tamasic attributes of attachment, hatred, etc. So Vij;wna or the cognising principle, with its Rrtjasic attribute of agency, is formed out of a combination of the knowing principle and the Guwa of Rajas. Among the states of consciousness, there is a particular one in the form " I am the agent, " and the principle apprehended in this particular state of con- sciousness with the attribute of agency pertaining to it is the thing denoted by the word 'Vijjwna'; and 'Vijwmamaya' means " formed of Vijwana.
