The length of a scene may not be prescribed, but care must be taken that sufBcient time be given to it, not too much or too little. It is certain that a word will not fix it. It is certain that the consent of the audience must be got for all that is done. The character must have probability, or, better said, actuality, and adequate motives.
No artificiality of reasoning or plot can compen- sate for their absence.
