When these sciences have been mastered we may proceed to the crowning science of dialectic, which Plato describes, with a wealth of metaphor, as a release from bon- dage, a turning away from shadows — a study without which a man is still in a dream ^ Dialectic goes to the first principle of things, doing away with all hypotheses ; and the dialectician, and he alone, can give an account of the essence of every kind of being *.
