The oil- palm, that valuable product of West Africa, is, however, not found in East Africa. The protectorate shelters over 3,500,000 inhabitants, of which a few thousands are Indians and Arabs, and a few hundreds British and other Europeans. Among the negroes the remarkable Baganda people — ^from whom, by a corruption, the name of the country is taken — call primarily for notice. They had attained to an indigenous civilisation greateS^than that of any other negro people, unaided by Arab or whit...e man, and their hne of monarchs has been traced as far back as a.d. 1400. They are now mostly Christianised, but were " always scrupulously clothed," at first in bark-cloth, but now in calico, and they have an extreme regard for decency, if not for morality. The kingdom of Baganda, ruled by " His Highness the Kabaka," has a thoroughly efiicient and recognised native Government, with royal revenue, pensions for the royal family, and a "royal salute of eleven guns." Agriculture is generally in the hands of the natives, and Baganda chiefs have developed cotton, cocoa and rubber plantations, assisted by the Government Botanical Depart- 206 THE TROPICS ment.
