I should nke to open my brief speech with just a word on that subject. There is. no prima facie reason why missionaries should be partisans on this opium question.
I think that The Lancet newspaper was perhaps a little hard on Sir George Birdwood the other div — no...t quite so hard as the North China Herald in the extract we heard read just now. The Lancet thought that Sir George Birdwood's opinion was greatly invalidated by the fact that he formed that opinion whilst he was still a student at Edinburgh. Now, many people imagine that missionaries form their opinion about the opium trade before they go to China; but the difference between Sir George Birdwood and ourselves is just here : we have been to China, and Sir George Birdwood has not ; and what we speak of is what we have seen, and what we have heard, and what we have tested.
