, 8th March 1896. 46 COW-POX The Commission consisted of Professors Malinverini (President), Martorelli, Bassi, Arena, Rizetti, Carenzi, and Signor Barberis (Secretary). The results were officially pub- lished in 1874. On 7th July 1871 Professor Bassi inoculated a heifer with syphilitic virus from an ulcer on a soldier in the military hospital. On 2ist July he found two oval, hard, copper-coloured papules, 6 mm. In circumfer- ence, with induration of the surrounding- tissue. On 23rd November 18...71 the Commission repeated the experiment of inoculating syphi- litic material from buboes and an ulcer, on another heifer. On 2nd December 1871 the Commission repeated the experiment on a third heifer by several incisions and inoculations from a primary syphilitic ulcer. For 48 days there was no result beyond local irritation. On 19th January, at the points of insertion, there had risen a slight elevation of rosy aspect, showing that the local irritation had not ex- hausted its influence, though as yet no specific manifestation could be recognised.
