Influence was brought to bear, however, and this project was defeated. There was also some talk of nationalising the Company, but this also fell through.
"The preamble of the Hanyehping demands recites that the proposed arrangement is for the 'common interests' of China and Japan. It is difficult to con- ceive what arguments could be advanced to show that China's interests would be served by admitting Japan as a partner in an enterprise of such paramount im- portance.
