At this period the number of scholars was fifty, and teacherssix; while the school required every assistance that he could render. With the assistance of a devoted young man, who soon became hiscolleague, the school was put into order and efficiency. Here, inconsequence of the want of teachers, and the close, unhealthy, cellar-like appearance of the place, the school was not very prosperous;but the society and cause we...re still less so. In fact, but for the vigorand vitality evinced in the Sunday-school, the chapel would have beensoon given up. In September, 18--, he writes, "I have been fifteen monthsin connection with this school. The future may show to me great goodresulting from this school, but at present we have only enough toencourage us. " For five years he had much to contend with from the apathyof friends, or from the neglect of those who ought to have been thefriends and patrons of the school; as well as from the indifference ofparents to the religious welfare of their children.
