Three fairly large though rather old British cruisers were patrolling the North Sea not far from the mouth of the Thames on the 22nd September, when one of them, the Aboukir, suddenly was seen to be sinking. The other two cruisers, thinking the Aboukir had struck a mine and wish- ing to save their fellow-sailors, at once steamed to her and stood by to save the crew. They were then in an ideal position for the attack of a submarine, for they were quite still. And both were speedily sunk by these... terrible little vessels.
