STATEMENT OF ALBERT T. BERCAW, OF LAKE COUNTY, OHIO, A FREE STATE MAN, IN RELATION TO A MEETING OF THE FREE STATE SETTLERS AT HICKORY POINT, K. T. , AND EVENTS GROWING OUT OF SAID MEETING.
I was present at a meeting, which was held at Hickory Point, on... or about the 26th of November, 1855. It was convened to investigate the circumstances attending the killing of C. W. Dow.
This meeting convened at noon, upon the spot where Dow was killed, and continued in session until four, p. M. Its chairman was a Free State man, named Powell. After considerable discussion, it was decided to ap- point a committee of seven, whose duty it should be to select twenty-five men — whose names were to be kept secret — the persons so selected were to act as a vigilance committee.
