A sectional cut of the gland is shown on page 15, Fig. 9. It is essential that these glands be water sealed through the tapped connection shown. In repacking, care must be taken that the brass distance piece "A" be kept practically central in the stuffing box, so that it is in proper position to distribute the sealing water all around the shaft. Clear water only should be used in this seal as with dirty water sediment would be deposited in the packing, and this gritty deposit will in time cut the shaft.
