The attitude which scientists and scholars generally are most prone to exhibit toward strange psychic phenomena is exhibited in Kant's later unfriendly bearing toward Sweden- borg. Maximilian Harden, in the article to which reference was made at the beginning of this section, recalls a remarkable GOETHE'S ODD EXPERIENCE 191 psychic phenomenon which Goethe experienced and de- scribes thus : l " I rode now on the footpath toward Drusenheim, and there one of the strangest presentiments surprised me.
