So unless you start doing something on prevention of blindness in the developing countries, we will choose some other body to represent the ophthalmologists. " In the meantime, the International Association for Prevention of Blindness that I took over didn't do anything. They met periodically, and they had a journal published on the cheapest 189 paper you... ever saw in your life and papers so out of date that it was awful.
I went over to Amsterdam as the successor to Franceschetti in 1968. They didn't let me in as an ex-officio member but as an interim president because I was first vice-president when Franceschetti died. I told them that I thought the organization should be disbanded. It didn't do anything. It hadn't done anything. Unless they put some money into it and did something viable, they ought to get rid of it.
