Something must also be ascribed to the Allied mathematics which taught that so many Germans were already killed in France that they could not be available for an offensive in Italy. But in view of the well-known vulnerability of the Italian position, it is dif- ficult to see how any campaign could have suc- ceeded, except on the supposition that resist- ance would be negligible. In any case the result was a crushing defeat of the Italians on the Isonzo in October, 1917.
