" I have often seen him in the hurry of business, when any other interruption would have been forbidden, promptly lay down his pen, and for a few minutes enter into religious conversation with as much fer- vor as though he had just risen from his knees in the secret place of prayer, instead of having been engaged, a moment before, in the most thorough attention to his secular duties.
