TREPANG.
THE sea-cucumber is a living creature a little the shape of a cucumber. It floats about in the sen, and its body is very soft, and has no bones in it. It belongs to a tribe of creatures that have tough skins, and can make their bodies longer or shorter, just as they please.
There is one kind of sea-cucumber that is eaten for food. It is called trepang. In the Chinese markets you see great heaps of trepang to be sold. The Chinaman thinks it does his health good to eat trepa
...ng. Where docs the trepang come from ?
From the coast of New Holland. It is not a pleasant part of the coast. Savages live there, who are as fierce almost as wild beasts. But that does not prevent boats from coming to fish for trepang.
The boats come from Malacca. The people of Malacca are called Malays. They are very clever at this land of fishing. They want to sell the trepang to the Chinese.
They bring a few iron kettles with them on shore, and they build a little shed. Then they begin to fish.
