To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The " Globe " has demonstrated a speed equal to fifty miles an hour, and is undoubtedly one of the fastest engines in the world. In the " Middlesboro, " for freight or goods purposes, Hackworth introduces for the first time six wheels, three pairs coupled. The engine has inside frames, and requires a tender at each end. There are no lathes large enough to turn off wheels when keyed on the axle, and, therefore, Hackworth makes his wheels of cast-iron in two portions — a large central boss and an... annular rim. The latter is fastened to the former by oak tree-nails, through which iron bolts or wedges are driven at intervals to insure greater tightness. The tires of wrought-iron are shrunk upon the outer cast- iron rim, which can be readily removed from or placed upon the central boss. There are, in this good year of 1830, no less than three types of horizontal- cylinder engines with crank axles — the " Bury, " Stephenson's "Planet" and Hackworth's "Globe. " James Kennedy is the designer of the " Bury " engine, which has inside frames, as have all the Stockton and Darlington engines, she having been built for that line.
