It is the question of values, the funda- mental question in historical synthesis and the one concerning which there is least agreement among historians today.

Clearly not the expression of opin- ion as to whether a certain fact or group of facts is good or bad, useful or useless today, but whether the fact or group has any importance for a given syn- thesis and, hence, should form an integral part of it.
