Inspired by his success, Thean prepared for the first government examination. Several days before it took place he went with his security to Tong Wan and entered as a candidate. The candidate's application stated in writing that he entered the examination for the honor learning gave, and not to make money by it, nor yet to become a teacher, nor to represent another.
