What reading level is The Ysabel Kid book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
He had too much faith in the Indian dark boy to worry for he knew the Kid was going to see friends and might take some time to get back. So Dusty took the point, riding far ahead of the mule train and watching out for any sign of the French as he followed the landmarks the Kid drew for him on a piece of bare soil back at their last camp. Halting the horse Dusty surveyed the range ahead of him. There was nothing in sight other than the rolling land with its stunted trees and occasional bosque... of cottonwood, scrub oak and other trees. For all the country ahead Dusty could see there was no sign of human life. He scanned the area with his powerful field-glasses and when satisfied they would be able to travel without risk of ambush waved the slowly moving train up towards him. Something white flickered into view over a distant hill. It caught Dusty’s eye for a brief moment, then disappeared for a moment. The glasses came up once more, sweeping across the range country until they picked up something which made Dusty curse softly under his breath.

An elementary piece of fact. Edson writes that Dusty is going to the stream to "wash out the coffee pot, and allow it to cool", because they're moving camp. Washing out the coffee pot cools the damned thing right away. Edson makes so many simple errors like this that I do not know how he came to be a best selling author at all. He is NO class compared to , say, Max Brand. Or even the boring and repetitious Louis L'Amour.

So stupidly contrived. It would take a large cannon ball to destroy the pillow beyond repair. A bullet would just go through it and the bedding, finally plough into the floor., It would leave a small hole that a finger might get into. Such patent inaccuracy just to add unbeccessary nonsense like his groaning because he had to sleep another night out...Pure padding to extend an already mediocre story. And poorly written , full of errors of fact like the pillow.
How did Edson become regarded as a top western novelist.??

I don't understand the using of percussion caps and powder, very prevalent in Edson's stories no matter what the date is supposed to be. Colt and other had issued several models which just loaded shells into the cylinders with nom messing around.
Do all of Edson's characters have to show certain eccentricities. Another thing. If Dusty Fog (why not 2 "gs" ) was promoted to be a captain at age 17 why did he never get further promotion. With all his achievements he should have been a general by War's end.
