The day has gone by ...when we could simply assert there was purposiveness, or lose ourselves in a mystic admiration of it. We must have what might be called a "working" purpose; that is one that will take into account just this tragically capricious element of purposelessness in life. The value of a pessimism such as that of Schopenhauer, then, is to drive those who cannot accept it to a higher optimism.
