Some of the best teachers would like every master to make his own exercises ; and there is much to be said for it. I now pass to the last head — the reduction and com- bination of marks. The first question that arises is that of averages for absence. The marks corresponding to an absence of a few days in a place-taking class are, of course, easily supplied. In the case of longer absences, and a more complicated system of marking, some discretion is wanted, ON MARKING. 23 and it is not safe to t...rust to routine. Suppose, for example, that your marks are made up monthly, and that a boy has been absent during one of three months that make up a term, it would not be right to give him at once the -average of the other two. The only case in which it would be right, would be when the marks of the head boy are the same for each of the three months. Take a simple instance, which often occurs. The head boy gets about 400 in each of the first two months, 250 in the third month, which is generally shortened by examinations and the preparation for them.
