If Namur, in its lofty steeps, bristling with fortifica- tions, reminds one of " grim visaged war, " so, in 49 like manner, on entering Leipzic one cannot but admire how much the " wrinkled brow" has been smoothed, for all these beautiful gardens and promenades, and healthy, aiiy open places have been formed on spaces once occupied by massive walls, deep ditches, closed gates, and other defences of the then small and confined city of Leipzic.
