The importance of this feature of a cost system cannot be exaggerated, and such a control should cover burden charges as well as labor and inventory records. Method of Control Materials should be recorded in double-entry ledger accounts, in as much detail as required, by charging such accounts with materials purchased or prepared and by crediting them with materials used as they are charged to the product at the point where they are consumed. These material accounts may be carried in the genera...l ledger but it is preferable to handle them in a separate ledger con- trolled through one or more general ledger accounts. Like material accounts, labor accounts may also be carried in as much detail as desired, but should be kept in control with actual expenditures. This can easily be done by crediting the charges against all labor cost accounts to a controlling account which may be called Wages Accrued accounts, the debit to which will be the amount of pay-roll checks as entered in the cash book.
