To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
These, then, are the results produced by trades-union principles ; and if these principles become dominant, the same frightful evils will spread all over the country. We will not, however, indulge in prophecy ;. The picture is already bad enough without investing it with the horrors of the imagination ; but we will proceed to a fuller dissection of the union system. From this evidence there exist three evils in connection with the system. The first is ; the unions seek to establish monopoly of ...labour ;* * This mouopoly is carried out in the brick-making trade in Manchester in the most systematic, and, at the same time, the most unjust and tyrannical manner. A ban is placed on machine-made bricks, and the neighbourhood is mapptd out into districtt: — Ashton, Stockport, and Manchester — so that brick- makers, or builders, or carters, are not allowed to contract for or convey bricks out of one district into another; and to carry out this villanous system, a staff of inspectors, or, in other words, custom-house officers, are employed and paid by the Union.
