Inasmuch, therefore, as these disorders formed such an important part of the disease, and inasmuch as they appeared under so many guises, and differed in some respects from the diseases of these parts with which we are familiar, I have thought it worth while to discuss them briefly in this paper, confining my attention to a limited portion of the respiratory tract — the lungs and bronchial tubes. In preparing for my task I have endeavored rather to gain a clear comprehension of the whole subjec...t and to mark the varying importance of each symptom in different countries, than to digest all the multitudinous reports which have appeared concerning the influenza.
As might be expected, the disease-processes excited in the lower respiratory tract by the influenza were complicated in many cases by other diseases which happened to prevail at the same time, as for instance, diphtheritic, asthmatic and ordinary bronchitic affections. The disordered condition of the mucous membranes caused by the influenza-process doubtless presented an unusually favorajble opportunity for the innoculation of various infectious matters.
