This is one of the west- ern ports which were evacuated only a few years ago. In my way hence to Meadville, a distance of forty-two miles, I had to pass through Le Bceiif Lake, Muddy-creek and Dead-water: a passage void of any lively interest; and AMERICA. 91 dangerous in respect to shallows, rapids, and stagnated vapours rising out of ponds near its banks an...d their imme- diate neighbourhood.
Meadville is pleasantly situated on French-creek : it is in a prosperous con- dition; and is a seat of justice for the counties of Erie, Warren, Ve- nango, and Crawford, in the last of which it stands. This town carries on a considerable trade : it contains about fifty houses, and several stores.
The distance from Meadville to Big- sugar-creek and Franklin, is thirty miles.
From the mouth of the creek there is a considerable fall, all the w ay to Frank- lin. That town is seated just below the creek, where it joins the Alleghany; is a post-town, containing about forty houses and several stores ; and is the principal place of Venango county.
