A Circassian, during the prime of life, appears to avoid everything that may tend to render him effeminate, even the society of his wife and children. With the same view, he braves not CIRCASSIA. 329 only the inclemency of weather, but hunger and thirst ; and, although surrounded by plenty, he will travel for weeks with no better provision than the usual bag of millet and bottle ofskhou. Indeed, it is only when accompanied by a stranger, and then, through courtesy, or on days of public festivals, that these most abstemious people indulge in any thing like luxurious living.
