1 believe the French traveller, M. Bonvalot, must have come this way, though I have not seen a proper map of his route. He appears to have been deflected north of Chamdo, to have been guided south, perhaps from Toba, to Gonjo Dzong, and to have proceeded thence south via Hlato to Markam.

We left Gonjo yesterday in cold windy weather, after a snow-storm during the night. This was our first taste of the approaching winter; as in North China, the wind makes all the difference in the cold weather.
