This nation once inhabited a different part of the country, where they lived in iubjection to the King of Ilaouila. Thence they were expelled by the Moors of thofe parts. They came lull to Tambucta ; and not thinking thcmlelves in. That place luriiciently feeurc, retired to this country whvre they now live in tranquillity and fafety.
On the 9th of November there fet out on the intended journey an hundred and forty am men INTERIOR OF AFRICA. 387 men on horfeback, I following them on foot. At noo...n we reached the village of Wadgaju, where we refrefhed ourfelves and the horfes with food. That I might not be left behind by the caravan, I afked one of the company if he would allow me to ride his pack-horfe ; and he gladly agreed to the propofal. After we had left the village which belongs to the kingdom of Bahahara, or Baha- hora, we were obliged to alight from the horfes, and to drive them before us over a fteep hill. I now learned that we were not travelling by the accuftomed road, which led for the fpace of twenty or four and twenty German miles acrofs a coun- try, in palling which it would have been neceffary to carry with us much forage for the horfes.
