The experiments of many observers show that such is in fact the case ; thus, according to Dr. Edward Smith, 1 the amount of carbonic acid exhaled during the night, as compared with that exhaled during the day, was in the ratio of 10 to 18. The experiments of Vierordt show that with slight diminution in the external temperature the amount of carbonic acid exhaled by man is increased about one- sixth.
