To Peru, large numbers were sent when the slaves there were emanci- pated a few years ago. Those taken to that country are carried on speculation, and their services sold with their contracts ; some may be fortunate in getting good masters, others the reverse. There is now a clause in the contracts that men shall not be sent to the Guano Islands, but as the contracts are sold, it is doubtful whether this clause is always adhered to. Those Chinese who were basely inveigled away, and sent by hund...reds to slave in working the guano, lived in misery the most horrible, were treated with the utmost severity, many ending their intolerable sufferings by throwing them- selves over precipices into the sea. Shame on the heartless wretches implicated in this horrible atrocity ; shame on them too for the disgraceful treatment of the coolies on board ship ! Some vessels lost hundreds on the voyage, and yet to this day, no punishment has been inflicted on the guilty perpetrators of these gigantic murders.
