I was standing upon the ruins of a fortification, built, as many suppose, by the an- cient Britons, and possessed successively by the MORAL REFLECTIONS. 115 Romans, the Saxons, the Danes, the Normans, and the modern English ; and a train of reflec- tions, somewhat tinged with melancholy, forced itself upon my mind.
