These divisions are: First. Triangulation, including base measurements, by means of which distances between prominent points are made known.
Second. Astronomical observations, by means of which directions of all measured lines are made known, and also the locations of points on the earth are made known by astronomically measuring their dis- tance from the equator (latitude), and their distance from a prime me- ridian (longitude).
Third. Leveling, by means of which the heights of objects above mean level of the sea are made known.
