108 Methodology In August, 1984, the researcher spoke to a meeting of all Chapter I teachers in the participating school system.
The project was described in general terms and teachers were asked to volunteer to participate. The director of the county's Chapter I program expressed support for the project. Subsequently, 12 teachers volunteered. They were randomly assigned to the experimental and control conditions, si

During the experimental period, which lasted from mid February, 1985, until mid May, 1985, teachers in the treatment group used the oral retelling technique once each week in each reading group that had a participating student.
Since no group had only one participating student, each subject had an opportunity to be the storyteller some weeks and to listen to a storyteller during other weeks.
